Throughout the Series

Season 2

Cami makes her debut appearance in the episode «The Arrival», she is among the other four mer-people who show up in Helen’s apartment. Ben and Maddie help relocate Ryn’s colony to his family’s cabin that has laid vacant for 10 years. In the next episode «The Wolf at the Door», the colony is spearfishing at a river near the cabin, she feels lonely without her mother but has the support of Ryn. Later in the same episode, she is attacked by a wolf that Katrina later kills and brings back to the pack in an attempt to reinstate herself as the Alpha. Cami survives, and later receives her own identification to better blend in with Bristol Cove’s population. As she grieves the loss of her mother, she carves crescent moon shapes wherever she is, it isn’t until «Primal Instincts» that she and her aunt Ryn visit the hallowed grave site where her mother Donna was buried. Upon learning that a human killed her, she becomes agitated and tells Ryn off saying she has become more human, she later sides with Katrina to return to the water. In «Distress Call», Ryn calls a truce and she stands down from her hostility.

In «Leverage» she accompanies her merfolk colony onboard Xandar’s fishing boat the North Star, but she stays behind to try and retaliate against Xandar for killing her mother. In doing so, she severs a pipe with a fire axe causing flammable gas to leak into the ship. Xandar tries to defend himself with a flare gun only to set the North Star ablaze causing it to burn and sink, Cami jumps overboard and swims away. In «New World Order», Cami is caught by Xandar and Calvin — accompanied by a few mercenaries — use the lure with her mother’s recorded voice to catch her since the military was willing to pay hundreds of millions of dollars for any captured mer-person, but this was just in a vision that Ben foresaw.

Season 3

She returns to her colony in «Revelations», she and Hunter train Ryn to learn combat skills both on land and sea in order to be able to fight Tia again. Cami accompanies Helen and Xandar to look after Meredith as she is carrying Ryn’s mermaid daughter inside, she kills Bryan perceiving him as a threat. Helen reprimands her for what she did and tells her that she does not get to decide who lives and who dies. At the end of «Life and Death», she witnesses her baby cousin to be born.

In the following episode «Mommy and Me» she returns to Ryn and Ben to tell them important news: Katrina is now a part of Tia’s tribe, other members of their colony who tried to fight back either died or have managed to escape. She and her aunt Ryn go back into the ocean to embark on a journey keep their waters safe for Hope and find whoever survived Tia’s attack.

In «The Island», she and Ryn find Eliza with four other mermaids from their colony. after clothing them, they make their way back to shore to board the boat. Cami is attacked by one of Tia’s merman warriors, Xander shoots him through the chest saving her life. Cami tells Xander «Now we are good», indicating that she forgives Xander for unintentionally killing her mother Donna. She along with Eliza and the two other mermaids stay in Helen’s apartment.

She takes her deceased mother’s corpse back to the water in «Til Death Do Us Part» to be buried in a place where Cami learned to hunt and survive from her father.

Origins

In Greek Mythology, the Sirens (Greek singular: Σειρήν Seirēn; Greek plural: Σειρῆνες Seirēnes) are dangerous predatory creatures who lured men using their enchanting voices to shipwreck on rocks near their meadow island.

Pre-Series

Bristol Cove was once home to mermaids. Over a hundred years ago, a Siren enchanted the men of Bristol Cove. A Captain, Charles H. Pownall, heard her Siren song. She emerged from the sea to greet him and he fell in love with her. The Siren and Charles H. Pownall fell in love and had a daughter. The daughter was born in transition and appeared deformed. The Siren returned to home to the sea and never returned. The Captain was so bitter and heartbroken that the men sought vengeance on the mermaids and slaughtered them. However despite this he loved his daughter so much that he spared her.

Difference with Mermaids

The main difference between mermaids and Sirens is that the latter are predators, killers, and dangerous creatures. Seducing men with their voices and bodies. Mermaids may not necessarily kill men, like Sirens do.

Mermaids are known as beautiful aquatic creatures that used their voices to enchant sailors and fall in love with them.

Weaknesses

  • Dehydration: Merfolk are unable to survive on land for extended periods of time. After prolonged deprivation of water, they will begin to asphyxiate, their eyes become green, and their skin will become extremely dry and irritated. After an extensive period of dehydration, their body will begin to shut down. Merfolk are able to spend more time on the surface each time they transform to occupy land.
  • Mortality: Since Merfolk are living creatures, they can be killed by conventional means (e.g. blood loss, decapitation, starvation, suffocation, and etc.). In fact, during their transformations into human form, the pain can be so great that some may even die while transforming.
  • Ocean Water: Whilst Ryn’s colony were capable of temporarily surviving on land by transforming within a tank filled with ocean water, this eventually proves to be incapable to sustain them. According to the merfolk, the water must be alive for it to properly sustain them.
  • High Stress: As displayed by Ryn, following the extraction procedure for her stem cells, her cortisol levels spiked up moments afterward, causing her to become more aggressive and stressed until the point that her predatory instincts returned. Singing the siren song has been shown to help alleviate this side-effect.
  • Water Pollution: As told by Maddie, merfolk are prone to infertility in the water due to pollutants that humans had dumped into the ocean.
  • Loss of Aquatic Form: Merfolk who choose to frequently travel to and from land can lead to a serious risk. According to Robb he cannot transform into his merman form anymore. This is because prolonged abstinence (at least several years long) from seawater can make the transition into mermaid/merman form last longer and it is harder to endure its agonizing pain, with the latter potentially leading to death.

Trivia

  • Prior to transitioning to male, the females are given a black marking on their faces to indicate themselves before and after entering the pool.
  • Yura is the only known Mermaid tribe chieftain to be male.
  • Subsequently, after Robb left the tribe, the high ratio of females created problems for the small population of males. This was the same time the transition pool started denying the females’ change to male, resulting in all the males to die out.
  • Yura’s tribe does make contact with the human locals on Nome. As explained by Robb, his merfolk reach out to them in times of need, such as when they caught enough fish to give to the starving locals during the middle of a harsh winter season.

Personality

At first, Yura was hostile and rather cold towards the others, especially Ryn, due to the tribe’s isolationism. He initially refuses to help Ryn, Ben, Maddie, and Robb with the war against Tia as his tribe is already dealing with the crisis of females unable to transition to males at a pool. Unlike most of the merfolk, he is more trusting towards humans as his tribe helped them out during a harsh winter when there were food shortages. After the pool gets cleaned and Yura completes his transition, he and his mermaid warriors express gratitude towards the others and offer to help them out. He is also forgiving as he allows Robb to rejoin the tribe, knowing that he had done it to save his species and tribe.

Powers and Abilities

Known Sirens

Like the rest of the merpeople, Sirens have identical abilities and powers with the only exception being the inclusion of the Siren Song:

  • Amphibious Transformation — Merfolk are able to take on an ordinary human appearance through a painful metamorphosis to blend in with modern society and avoid being detected for varying lengths of time. Merfolk who gained legs and later went back into the water go through a painful transformation process. Their teeth become dagger-like and their skin turns into scales; silvery-gray scales for mermaids. Their hands become talons and a dorsal fin emerges from their backs. Their legs fuse together to form a scaly fishtail. Merfolk can only transform in ocean water, proven when Ryn was pushed into a swimming pool but remained in her human-like state. When they transform into their human-like forms, they shed their scaly fishtails
  • Aquatic Habitation — Sirens can survive and adapt to underwater environments such as high water pressure and extreme water temperatures.
  • Speed Swimming — A Siren’s powerful and streamlined tail and huge flukes can propel them through the roughest waters with incredible speed, grace and agility with minimal restrictions to water resistance. Like a dolphin, their fins can propel them high out of the water.
  • Extraordinary Strength — Sirens are naturally stronger than humans.
  • Siren Song — Sirens are able to emit a captivating singing voice that lures anyone who hears. it toward the singer. Apparently those who are exposed to it have lingering side effects; the exact nature of these symptoms are as of yet not clearly defined. Ben compares it to a drug, describing it as something he needs. Eventually, the Siren Song leads the person that hears it to hallucinate seeing that mermaid everywhere and hearing their Siren Song out in the ocean. The person will then be driven into the water to find that mermaid and eventually drown. The song can be effective on anything or anyone, including men, women, and even animals.
  • Regeneration — Sirens possess greater regenerative capabilities than those of humans. They heal quickly from non-fatal injuries within a short period.

Personality

Merfolk usually only kill for survival. According to Helen Hawkins, Merfolk are highly intelligent creatures, more so than humans at least. This is displayed in Ryn’s extremely quick grasp of the English language and her memory also appears to be quite superb. Merfolk have some difficulty adjusting to life on land; though given their in-exposure to human culture, this can be expected.

Because Merfolk have some difficulty speaking human languages, they tend not to speak much as they namely commune with high-pitched calls and wails. It can be assumed that they do have some kind of non-human language that they use in the ocean, as several of the merfolk have made references to stories they were told as children in the water about certain subjects. This is further confirmed when Tia communicates with her Tribe when it translated their language in subtitles. As babies, they don’t cry right after they’re born because crying attracts predators.

In «Mommy and Me», Ben mentions that many marine mammals trigger a hormone that affects their offspring’s growth and adaptation, that is the case when an offspring is being cared for by the mermen as they have a different hormonal response than the females.

In «Northern Exposure», Yura’s tribe located in Nome, Alaska has social skills that contrast with Ryn’s colony: they are isolationists, staying in their waters and never leaving for any reason. The only contact they have on the surface of their waters are the human locals who they trade with under certain circumstances.

Diet

Their diet consists of seafood such as fish, shrimp, clams, crab, and lobsters. In «Pilot», a shark’s head was seen with bite marks indicting Merfolk eat shark as well. Ryn also killed and ate a rat when she was first on land. Though Ryn and the other merfolk initially seemed repulsed by food that wasn’t fish once they took human forms, they have been shown to soon develop a taste for other human food; Ryn has been eating a variety of fruit and side dishes and has professed her love for Jell-O, while Cami was seen enjoying grapes by tossing them into her mouth.

Merfolk have also been shown to enjoy alcoholic beverages while in their human forms, with Ryn often partaking in social drinking with her human friends and Levi making his fondness for beer very well known.
